How to Build the Perfect Summer Salad
When the weather heats up, there’s nothing more refreshing than a vibrant summer salad: crisp, colorful, and full of flavor. At The Leaf, Chef Jeremy Crossmon draws inspiration from the season, sharing, “Spring and summer welcome light and savory dishes that delight the senses without overwhelming the body.”
Keep reading to discover how to layer fresh, seasonal ingredients into salads that are just as satisfying as they are refreshing.
1. Choose Your Base
Every great salad starts with a strong foundation. The greens you choose can completely change the tone of your salad and help tie together the flavors of your toppings and dressing. Here are a few greens to try:
Kale: Hearty and nutrient-dense with a satisfying chew. Great for holding up to bold flavors and hearty toppings.
Arugula: Peppery and light, it adds a little bite that works beautifully with sweet fruits or rich cheeses.
Spinach: Tender and mild, perfect for soaking up vinaigrettes and pairing with both savory and sweet ingredients.
Spring Mix: A blend of baby greens that’s balanced and ready for anything.
2. Add Your Toppings
Colorful toppings add texture, sweetness, and crunch, and make your salad more appealing. Play around with combinations and use what’s in season to keep things fresh and exciting!
Fruits: Strawberries, blueberries, peaches, or watermelon add natural sweetness.
Veggies: Cucumber, cherry tomatoes, corn, shaved carrots, and avocado keep it fresh and nutrient-dense.
Nuts & Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, or pepitas add crunch and a boost of healthy fats.
3. Say Cheese
Cheese can be the element that ties your whole salad together. Try choosing a cheese that complements the other flavors you’re working with.
Feta: Tangy and crumbly, perfect with watermelon or berries.
Gorgonzola: A bold blue cheese that pairs well with steak or sweet fruits.
Blue Cheese: Sharp, creamy, and adds a punch of flavor.
Goat Cheese: Soft, mild, and spreads beautifully throughout the salad.
4. Pick a Protein
To turn your salad into a satisfying meal, don’t forget the protein!
Grilled Chicken: A classic, lean option that pairs with nearly everything.
Sliced Steak: Adds bold, savory flavor. This is perfect for heartier greens like kale.
Roasted Chickpeas or Edamame: Great plant-based options that are packed with protein.
4. Dress It Up
A great salad needs a great dressing, and nothing beats a homemade vinaigrette. Here is one to try:
Lemon-Honey Vinaigrette
1/4 cup olive oil
2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp honey
Salt & pepper to taste
Whisk all ingredients together until smooth. Taste and adjust as needed. Drizzle over your salad just before serving.
The beauty of a summer salad is its versatility. We hope your salad, and summer, are packed with flavor and happiness!
