Set the Table for Fall: Simple DIY Decor Ideas

The Leaf table decor

There's something special about autumn in Ohio. Around here, we’re big believers that your table should feel just as welcoming as the season itself.

1. Start with a Seasonal Color Scheme

Fall color palettes can completely set the tone for your table. You might go for rich and moody hues like burgundy, navy, or forest green. Or maybe soft, earthy neutrals like cream, taupe, and eucalyptus speak to your style. If you're feeling bold, try vibrant tones like marigold, rust, and sage. Choose two to three complementary colors and let them guide your choices for napkins, runners, plates, glassware, and floral accents.

2. Create Simple Name Cards

Personal touches go a long way, especially when entertaining. Try tying small handwritten name tags to:

  1. Mini pumpkins

  2. Cinnamon sticks

  3. Dried orange slices

  4. Sprigs of rosemary or thyme

Not only do these act as name cards, but they also double as aromatic and festive decor.

3. Layer Textures for a Cozy Feel

Fall is often associated with warmth. Layering your linens and serving pieces helps add that feeling to your table. Mix a soft linen runner with woven placemats, ceramic dishes, and vintage-style glassware. Even a cozy plaid scarf can make a lovely base for a table runner in a pinch!

4. Incorporate In-Season Foliage and Herbs

Skip the plastic pumpkins. Nature has everything you need! Clip branches of colorful leaves, forage for acorns and pinecones, or gather fresh herbs like sage and rosemary. Place them loosely down the center of your table or arrange them in small bud vases.

DIY Fall Centerpiece

You don’t need to be a florist to create something beautiful. Here’s one of our go-to centerpieces:

You’ll Need:

  1. 1 medium-sized wooden or ceramic bowl

  2. Assorted mini pumpkins and gourds

  3. A few stems of eucalyptus or foraged fall leaves

  4. Candles (either pillar or LED tea lights)

Assembly:

  1. Start by placing the foliage around the base of the bowl.

  2. Fill the bowl with mini pumpkins and gourds, arranging for a variety of shapes and colors.

  3. Tuck in more greenery or dried florals to fill gaps.

  4. Surround the bowl with a few candles to give it a warm, flickering glow.

This centerpiece is low enough to allow conversation across the table, but festive enough to be the star of your spread!

No matter how you style your table this fall, the most important element will always be the people gathered around it. Add a little intention, a dash of creativity, and a whole lot of heart, and you’re sure to set the stage for special memories. Happy hosting from all of us at The Leaf!
